Here is a headline from Yahoo! News: Bomb kills 20 in Iraq after bloodiest month for US What does that tell you? Does that tell you that this is the bloodiest month yet for US troops, even through the whole of the insurgency? That more soldiers died in October 2005 than at any time since the beginning of the occupation of Iraq, back in mid-2003? 'Cause that's what it says to me. So I clicked through to read the whole article. Here is the revelatory segment from that Yahoo! Ne...

Hey JU all, Hope y'all are having a great Halloween night. It's bedtime now, and wanted to see if you got as much candy as we did, and if you gave away as much candy as we did, too. Ben went as a sorceror, Dylan as a mummy, and Emilie went as Hermione Granger. Very cool bunch of kids, indeed. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Iran retracted its statement that they'd like to see Israel wiped from the map. From the BBC: Iran says it has no intention to attack Israel despite a call by its president to have it "wiped off the map". Iran's foreign ministry said Tehran respected the UN charter and had never used or threatened to use force. But it also rejected a UN Security Council statement condemning President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over his remarks. Oh no, our PRESIDENT doesn't speak for the sovereign nati...

Apparently Sylvester Stallone hasn't rid himself of every shred of decency. Earlier this week, it was announced that Stallone was going to start in Rocky VI . Well, today, it was announced that he would star in Rambo IV . When will the madness end? Hasn't Stallone paid for all his fine livin' and bling?

Upon the discovery of several new planets within our own solar system, astronomers are rethinking their criteria for planets. Among the new planets for consideration are such extraterrestrial bodies as Xena, Sedna, and Quarog (I hope I spelled that right). Xena's discovery has prompted the International Astronomical Union to reconsider its definition of a planet. Currently it considers both Pluto and Xena to be trans-Neptunian objects, and says that until it has drawn up its new definition...

Harriet Miers has withdrawn her nomination, which causes all who care about judicial integrity to breathe a collective sigh of relief. While I did not publish my opinion here on JU, I am very happy that the sycophantic, fawning Miers, who had no judicial experience whatsoever, has been retracted as a nominee for a Supreme Court Justiceship. I think she was a bad pick. Completely unqualified as a judge. Hopefully she can get some nice district court or even circuit court appointmen...

Ricky Gervais from "The Office" had a synth-pop group in the early '80s called "Seona Dancing" (pronounced "shaw-nah"). Here is the photo: Seona Dancing.com Yikes, double yikes.

Hello all, Next month will be my 13th anniversary of completing my two-year mission to England for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . I spent two years there, from November 1990 to November 1992. I lived in and around London; mostly out in the countryside, but spent about six or seven months in the City, also known as the "Crossroads of the World". So what is required to be a successful Mormon missionary? Let's break it down... STUDY "Missionary school" consis...

Who watched with gleeful awe as Steve Harrigan of FOX News almost got sawn in half by a flying road sign in Everglades City this morning? Who saw poor Trace Gallagher get blown about by 120 mile-an-hour winds in the streets of West Palm Beach? It's like an accident waiting to happen. Okay, hurricane reporter should be up there with the most dangerous jobs in America. Those poor suckers, why can't they get some nice cushy desk job, or at least report live from the National Hurricane Ce...

It's long, but a worthy read. The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene and Joost Elffers Law 1 Never Outshine the Master Always make those above you feel comfortably superior. In your desire to please or impress them, do not go too far in displaying your talents or you might accomplish the opposite – inspire fear and insecurity. Make your masters appear more brilliant than they are and you will attain the heights of power. Law 2 Never put too Much Trust in Friend...

As you may know, we just moved to the state of Maryland, and I enrolled my kids in school. They started on October 3rd. My kids then had October 4th off for Rosh Hashanah. They had the 13th off for Yom Kippur. They have today (October 21st) off for the teachers to attend an MSTA convention/staff development day. Anne Arundel County 2005-06 School Calendar So, I am all for diversity and religious holidays. And I certainly have nothing against the teachers honing their professional s...

Okay, so here's the deal: Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) won $853,492 in the recent Powerball drawing. On a whim, he says, he bought a few tickets while stopping for gas in DC. Random numbers. We should all employ such fiscal responsibility. Mathematically challenged senators who head the budget committee... yeah. The kicker: he's already a millionaire. I guess the old adage is true: his NEXT million was the easiest!
