Al-Qaeda talking truce with US
Published on January 19, 2006 By singrdave In War on Terror
Here's an unexpected turn of events. He claims that despite al-Qaeda's preparations for fresh US attacks, he wants to sue for peace. He claims that he's got several projects underway and the only way we can prevent them from happening is to accede to bin Laden's demands. He claims that he doesn't want to fight any more, but can we take it at face value?

From Yahoo News:
Osama bin Laden warned that al Qaeda was preparing new attacks inside the United States, but said the group was open to a conditional truce with Americans, according to an audio tape attributed to him on Thursday.

"The operations are under preparation and you will see them in your houses as soon as they are complete, God willing," said the speaker on the audio tape, who sounded like bin Laden.

In the tape, broadcast by al Jazeera television, bin Laden said al Qaeda was willing to respond to public U.S. opinion in favor of withdrawing troops from Iraq.

"We have no objection to responding to this with a long term truce based on fair conditions."

It was not immediately known when the tape was recorded. A U.S. counterterrorism official said U.S. intelligence was assessing the tape in an effort to determine its authenticity.

Bin Laden issued an audio tape in April 2004 in which he also offered a truce -- on that occasion to Europe, but not to the United States. Analysts saw the move at the time as an attempt to drive a wedge between the United States and its allies and to scare wavering coalition members out of Iraq.

Bin Laden's last audio tape was in December 2004. The interval between then and now was by far his longest public silence since the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001.

Wow, what a shocker. It's a surprising turn of events and an intriguing offer. But not believable. "Death to Americans" has been their rallying cry for so long. Why is it suddenly "live and let live"?

They give people like osama and zawahiri their talking points.

yeah i gotta direct line to bin laden. that's why the nsa is monitoring my email.

I found that appalling,

well...that's two points on which we both agree.

Times like these I really wish there was a "so good I spat my tea all over my computer screen" button. Insightful and trolling just aren't enough for me.

If you really believe this, you are far more delusional than I thought.

Does this not sound like moveon.org and DNC talking points?

Bush: You entered Iraq with lies, you will lose Iraq and lie about it and you will leave with the pretext that you have completed your mission. . . . America only has to decide on the number of (troops) it wishes to lose before withdrawing."

And you don't think that bin Laden could have come up with that on his own? I mean, give the man a little credit. He may be evil and horrible and generally detestable, but the man is no dummy. I'm sure he could have figured that out all on his own.

Of course, there is a sector of the media that thinks that this is horrible for the Dems. The spin in the linked article is blatantly apparent, but it's an interesting theory about how the tape will actually help the Administration. Link

The point from that Post-Chronicle article is well taken, in that any show of strength for the terrorists will only strengthen our resolve and remind us that the fight is real. Instead of speculating that bin Laden is dead, now more than ever we will need legislation that effectively prosecutes the War on Terror.

That quote was from al-zawahari, and no I don't think he would have came up with that on his own. He's repeating the same rhetoric from the left. Coincidence? I doubt it.

and somebody in JU accused me of imagining some ficticious use of"propaganda" by the bacteria. ;~D

if by 'somebody' you mean me, you apparently misunderstood the point i was trying to make. al quaeda apparently pumps out plenty of propaganda but...

okay.

i was gonna go into the part about how no westerner capable of going to the corner alone without a name and address written on a lil note pinned to his or her chest was at risk of being influenced by messages from sheik bin laden or his underlings--thus rendering it effectively inneffectual on our side of the line.

Which is why the only comment I had on the subject was a joke. Like you, I don't think anything Osama says should be taken as anything but, "Western Culture, we want you dead. Embrace Islam, or we will do all we can to destroy you!" Any talk of a "truce" from Bin Laden is a lie, you know it, I know it, and Prs. Bush knows it.

One thing this can do is identify those who think "peace" means "give in at all costs". Other than that, it's great fodder for entertainment. ;~D

Glad to see you were able to catch both the humor, and the friendly ribbing towards yourself.

Besides, we aren't going to negotiate a truce with a tape. Bin Laden will have to present himself for negotiations if he is really serious, which I have no doubt that he is not.

Good idea!  Then when he pops up out of his poop hole, we can nail the SOB!

It's amazing the power Osama has over the world. All he had to do was make a tape (God knows how old the tape is) and say the worlds peace or truce and he has everyone (Dems, Reps, Cons, Libs) more devided than before even when they all agree (a rare thing) that the tape was bull.

I have to hand it to the guy, he definitely is a genius. He can probably claim "mission complete" with this tape.

Do you all listen to yourselves? And I mean everyone. We are all arguing over a messege, that we all agree is bull, but we just can't resist taking a swing at each other. We finally have one thing we can all agree on, the stupidity of this tape, and yet Osama still manages to keep us divided and you know what they say about Divide.

All I can do is hope and pray and beg that he would do it in front of me.
I would not hesitate for one split second on pulling the trigger!

If we plan to stay in Iraq until the majority want us to leave, we should have been out about a year ago!
