The effects of Tuesday's elections
Published on November 5, 2008 By singrdave In Marriage

Arizona and Florida have effectively banned same-sex marriage.  California's decision is still forthcoming, but as on 9:00 AM EST on Wednesday morning, the votes echo those cast in AZ and FL.

And now for the effects: I got a very serious email this morning from my lesbian friend, mourning the dissolution of her marriage.

------------------------------------------

Well Dave you helped do it. You as a straight man helped get people to decided that I can never get married to a woman in which I love. I hope all are proud of controlling other people's lives. You would let me sin in other areas, if this is so morally wrong, like other sins, why not stay out of it. In AZ the law passed that only one man and one woman may get married, this law is supposed to never be up for a revote. Love you as a friend. It is now legal for abortion but not love. Ain't America Grand.

------------------------------------------

Here are my questions: are heterosexuals happy with themselves?

And what does my friend do, now that she is no longer married?

And while I had a wonderful response for her last time, I don't have a clue how to respond to this.

I can't blame you for not having a clue as to how to respond to this. To be honest, I think that she, not only dropped the whole issue on your lap, but also put you on the spot and almost sounded as if she wa throwing the friendship out the window because of this. I can understand her frustration, but I thought friends were friends regardless and to me this email proves otherwise. But that's just me.

I think you should stick to your honesty when you replied to her the first time and remind her that she knew ahead of time what your belief was and that to blame you for her frustration is misguided and unfair. In the end, it was she and those who were against these amendments who failed to change peoples minds. This is what this country is all about, we gave the amendment a chance to pass or fail and the people of this country spoke. I am sorry for her situation but majority wins.

Ask her why she does not stay out of things that do not affect her?  Since she appears to be a lesbian in a committed relationship, ask her why she votes for abortion?  She will never use it, yet she is dictating to others her views on it. (abortion just being one possibility of things that do not affect her, yet probably has a very strong opinion on - another - Affirmative Action).

What a statement!  It is now legal for abortion but not love.

Who outlawed love?    Outlawing marriage for two women is NOT outlawing love.  That's a ridiculous statement.

Her letter was filled with emotion.   We should not be legalizing anything based on emotion.

Your questions:  Are Heterosexuals happy with themselves?

Answer:  It's not about being happy.  It's about doing the right thing for our culture and for our children.  There's no gloating here.  It's a sad day in my book that we are even having this discussion today.  Oh, and California came out with a ban against same sex marriage as well as far as I heard.

What should your friend do that she's no longer married?

Answer:  Whatever she wants.  LW gave some practical ideas.  How about going about her day to day as she did before she got married to another woman?   What does the rest of society do after they find themselves suddenly unmarried due to death or divorce?

Your friend should be grateful the people have spoken and that is their will, just as the election was their will. Not everyone is happy to be sure, but life is never fair through different eyes.

We should not be legalizing anything based on emotion.

We also shouldn't be banning things based on religion.

Tell her to grow up, quit boo-hooing, and get on with her life. You can't always have it your way, in fact, damn near half the nation was disappointed in some way or another this morning.

hahaha.  Man ain't that the truth.

At least tell her to limit her crying to her own blog.

Hi singrdave,

Please tell your friend that she's more than welcome here in Canada...no joke/sarcasm/cynicism intended.

Gay marriage is legally allowed here -and- to top it off with global warming in a few years the southern parts of Canada will be like Florida and Arizona are today anyway!

Can't lose!

California once again shows that even in the most LIBERAL state in the union they are still center right about some things and Marriage was defined as one man and one woman. But once again will the gay community let it go. Nope they continuie to throw their life choice in the face of straights till they anger straight to the point of sheer madness.

Let them have a civil union with all the perks of marriage for G_D's sake and let it end.

MM I heard an interesting take on this. Had this been an election year like 2004 the bill probably would have been voted down, the recent explosion of black voters (in support of Obama) had the unforeseen effect by a group that supports Christian values (i.e. marriage between a man and woman) by over 70%. Had the CA black voters stayed home in numbers like previous elections, things might have been different. All of Ellen's and Spielberg's cash did not make a difference. I'm sure many liberals did not plan on this effect. If blacks stay energized (and I hope they do) in politics, gay activists are going to have to persuade them. I think that will be a difficult task.

This is the whole unvarnished truth. Glad someone else picked up on that!! But it was voted on in 2004 and passed by a much larger margin than this time {53 to 47 percent} last time it was closer to 65 percent to define marriage as one man to one woman. In 2006 4 LIBERAL activist judges from San Fran freako overturned the will of the people, hence the new vote to make it a state amendment to the states constitution.

lol. Ya, wonder I wonder if the "enviromentalists" will ever be able to do that!  Remember Zoo you don't have to have a god to be religous.
