Kerry claims HS graduation rate is at 47%
Published on February 1, 2006 By singrdave In US Domestic
From today's Drudge Report:
Sen. John Kerry claimed this morning on NBC TODAY that 53% of America's children do not graduate from high school: a claim that raised eyebrows in the NBC control room, sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

Kerry made the comments after host Katie Couric asked the former presidential candidate about Bush's State of the Union call to train 70,000 additional teachers in math and science.

COURIC: He wanted to train 70,000 additional teachers in math and science.

KERRY: That's terrific. But 53 percent of our children don't graduate from high school. Kids don't have after-school programs. He didn't ask America to sacrifice anything to achieve great goals and the biggest example is making the tax cut permanent for the wealthiest people in America. The average American struggles to find time to take carry of families, working two or three jobs. It's a disgrace. He did not tell the real state of the union.

Kerry's 53% claim conflicts with a recent press release from the U.S. Census Bureau: "High School Graduation Rates Reach All-Time High".

And the Census Bureau's own website states: 85.9 Percent Of Americans Aged 20-24 Are High School Graduates.
(U.S. Census Bureau Website, www.census.gov , Accessed 2/1/06)

Pure comedy, coming from the Democratic leadership.

53% of brain cells are a terrible thing to waste!

want to place a bet on no liberals chiming in?  Or if so, demanding another source?

maybe it was 53% of liberal children?

You mean adults.  The children still have a chance to!

Displays exactly how much respect we should grant the statistics that come out of the mouths of the average politician of either side...

I read that 53% of people who get BOTOX are still ugly.

Ha! Good one TW John looks like a hound dog doesn't he?!

I think he has his blinders so firmly on about the "tax cut for the wealthy" that he doesn't see what is really coming out of his mouth. I agree, good comedy!

I guess he's been reading about Milwaukee Public Schools and thinks that is indicative of the whole country. Of course, as usual, he's dead wrong.

It's hilarious, he says that we Americans haven't sacrificed enough, but then his example is "tax cuts for the rich"? If his point is that nobody but "the rich" benefitted, how is it a "sacrifice" for the rest of us if it gets repealled? I'm also entertained by his call for everyone else to have to sacrifice more. The only thing he's ever sacrificed was his honor and integrity... and that's assuming he may have had them to sacrifice. ;~D

Inexcusable blunder even though he probably confused it with stats on minority graduation within urban areas.

I would think you'd have to look to the worst areas to find even urban 'minority' schools that have a 53% dropout rate. It sounds more to me like he just pulled a number out of his posterior...

Detrit qualifies. But then schools in the same county have graduation rates anywhere from about 45% to about 90%.
