Is there such a thing?
Published on February 21, 2005 By singrdave In Republican
I am a Republican, though I take great pride in knowing that while I have a desire to see the Republican agenda move forward, I do not just vote mindlessly, based on parenting or any other external influence. I try to be as open-minded as possible when it comes to politics, and try to "vote my conscience" as best I can. It just so happens that my conscience leads me to vote for the Republicans.
It definitely wasn't parenting. I was raised by a crazed anti-establishment father and a mother who has only voted for one Republican in her life (Dave Durenburger (R-Minn), later indicted for various crimes). My dad was a nutburger with extra cheese, especially after my parents' divorce, and I absolutely did not follow in his ultra-whatever leanings. But my wife can't figure out how I got to be so conservative, considering my upbringing.
As an open-minded Republican, I enjoy the Daily Show thoroughly. It is hilarious and a great way to understand the other point of view. But I understand it is only entertainment. Anyone who holds their beliefs so guardedly that they cannot laugh at themselves is wound way too tight.
I'm sure that, over time, my views will come fully to light as I rant about the events of the day.

Yeah, I'm not getting the deep, well-hidden message of that poem.

"....for hates sake, I SPIT my last BREATH....at thee...."
Ah yes, arguably the best of the Trek films.

It sounds to me, singrdave, that you may have simply rebelled against your father's system of beliefs, and, since your mother kind of went along with him, hers, too.
I did the same, in a way....my dad was an alcoholic who sometimes would slap my mom around (in later years, to his great credit, he mellowed, though, and was a fine example of a man before he died).
I swore as a kid that I would never drink like that and would never, ever hit a woman. I don't (to great excess like that, anyway), and haven't.
Many on here would disagree with you (mostly "non-judgemental" libs, natch, who nontheless sit in gleeful judgement of our beliefs), but there are many of us more open-minded cons on here.
What those "non-judgmental" libs fail to realize is that a little self-righteousness and judgmentalism is a good thing for you; it keeps you grounded in your own beliefs.

Well, the original Trek used a lot of classic lit for its subjects and titles, especially Shakespeare. Gene Coon (one of the writers..inventor of the Klingons, The Prime Directive and other important plot points), I think it was, was a big fan of Willie S. When Star Trek II was being written, the director, Nicholas Meyer, happened to be reading "Moby Dick", and since Kirk was Khan's "white whale", the reference was used.
