The end of a very long era
Published on August 20, 2007 By singrdave In Music
The Rolling Stones have announced that this Sunday's concert will be their last. Ever. No more.

They'll play Sunday night at London's mega-venue O2 Arena and then be done with the whole thing. From the Post Chronicle:

The Rolling Stones will reportedly quit touring for good after playing London's O2 Arena this Sunday (26.08.07).

The veteran rockers are believed to have declared that their current 'A Bigger Bang Tour' will be their last because frontman Sir Mick Jagger, 64, and guitarist Keith Richards, 63, will be too old to do another. A source said: "We've been told this will be the last tour. Embarking on a Stones world tour takes years to plan. Mick and Keith would be in their late 60s by the time they would be ready to rock once more." Mick, Keith, drummer Charlie Watts, 66, and guitarist Ronnie Wood, 60, end their massive two-year tour this week with three dates at the new O2 Arena, with their final performance on Sunday (26.08.07).

The band was formed in 1962 and has been touring regularly ever since. The group have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide over the last five decades, and played thousands of sold-out shows. The Stones have been receiving rave reviews for the latest leg of their tour, and wowed 60,000 at Ireland's Slane Castle on Saturday (18.08.07).

Admittedly, they are long in the tooth but still able to rock the knickers off many newer poseur bands. Though never a big Stones fan myself, I will miss hearing of their tour exploits. Jagger, Richards, and the gang are ____________ (insert your own superlative here). This is the end of an era.

a sigh I was 16 when I first heard the stones, the song was "time is on my side" I thought they sucked! I thought the whole so called British invasion sucked. Give me the temptations, Aretha, Dion and the Belmont's, I soon learned to really like the English sound, the end of an era is right!, long live the Stones!

Good bye, good riddance. There's so many better bands out there that are overlooked in the name of "classics". Give me Floyd, Zepp or any number of newer, better British bands (such as Porcupine Tree or Blackfield) any day.

I echo SC's comment.  I won't be missing them at all.  When was the last time they actually released some new, relevant music?  Hmmm, I don't remember either.

New? Far too long. Relevant? My (debatable) answer: never.

I just can't stand the Stones. Their best work to date was done when Weird Al turned their song list into a giant polka. Their second best work, of course, was done by cover bands.

I'm glad I got the opportunity to see them live last year. They put on a pretty awesome show.

If they'd had to pay for all their drugs they wouldn't have any money.

I always loved the Stones...still do...seeing them step down just makes me realize that I, too, am near the end of my Rockin' days.
As for the quality or relevance or commercial value of their music...beauty is in the eye of the beholder...but if you weren't there in the early sixties to feel the impact of the changes in the music you can not understand how us oldies feel about groups like the Stones, the Animals, Dave Clark 5, Zombies, Kinks, ...and of course, the Beatles....and so many others. I wasn't too thrilled at first, either. They ran the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean and all the other SoCal groups right off the charts. In April of 1964, the Beatles did something that no one else had ever done and no one else has done since...they held the top five spots on the Charts and held 7 of the top ten. Like 'em or hate 'em...they left their mark.

If they'd had to pay for all their drugs they wouldn't have any money.

Reminds me of the line from "Love Actually" as delivered by an aging rock star:
Kids, don't buy drugs. Become a rock star, they give 'em to you for FREE!

It is the end of an era, but then I ask you, what did the Rolling Stones do that brought us to a new place in music?

About time!
I Think NOFX's song Dinosaurs Will Die was about them.
