Well, what do you know...

Remember this? WMD in Iraq. The Iraqi government was found to be in "material breach" of its obligations back in 2002:

Holding Iraq in “material breach” of its obligations under previous resolutions, the Security Council this morning decided to afford it a “final opportunity to comply” with its disarmament obligations, while setting up an enhanced inspection regime for full and verified completion of the disarmament process established by resolution 687 (1991).

By the unanimous adoption of resolution 1441 (2002), the Council instructed the resumed inspections to begin within 45 days, and also decided it would convene immediately upon the receipt of any reports from inspection authorities that Iraq was interfering with their activities. It recalled, in that context, that the Council had repeatedly warned Iraq that it would face "serious consequences" as a result of continued violations.

This, of course, was the Bush Administration's justification for the invasion of Iraq. And was subsequently disproved for lack of any findings. We couldn't seem to find the WMD, the mobile weapons labs, or any yellowcake from Niger.

But look! Today the US government declassified a report that reveals a lot. Apparently the US troops in Iraq, as well as civilian groups within the country, have been finding WMD in Iraq since 2003, just after the invasion! From 22 June 2006, FOX News reported:

WASHINGTON — The United States has found 500 chemical weapons in Iraq since 2003, and more weapons of mass destruction are likely to be uncovered, two Republican lawmakers said Wednesday.

"We have found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, chemical weapons," Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., said in a quickly called press conference late Wednesday afternoon.

Reading from a declassified portion of a report by the National Ground Intelligence Center, a Defense Department intelligence unit, Santorum said: "Since 2003, coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent. Despite many efforts to locate and destroy Iraq's pre-Gulf War chemical munitions, filled and unfilled pre-Gulf War chemical munitions are assessed to still exist."

He added that the report warns about the hazards that the chemical weapons could still pose to coalition troops in Iraq.

"The purity of the agents inside the munitions depends on many factors, including the manufacturing process, potential additives and environmental storage conditions. While agents degrade over time, chemical warfare agents remain hazardous and potentially lethal," Santorum read from the document.

"This says weapons have been discovered, more weapons exist and they state that Iraq was not a WMD-free zone, that there are continuing threats from the materials that are or may still be in Iraq," said Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

The weapons are thought to be manufactured before 1991 so they would not be proof of an ongoing WMD program in the 1990s. But they do show that Saddam Hussein was lying when he said all weapons had been destroyed, and it shows that years of on-again, off-again weapons inspections did not uncover these munitions.

Hoekstra said the report, completed in April but only declassified now, shows that "there is still a lot about Iraq that we don't fully understand."

This is in line with the July 2003 Greenpeace announcement that they'd found yellowcake in Iraq! Greenpeace, no less! They're certainly not "administration stooges"...

TUWAITHA, Iraq - Environmental group Greenpeace called on the US-led coalition governing Iraq to clean up villages surrounding a nuclear site outside Baghdad that have been contaminated by "frightening levels" of radioactive material.

Carrying Arabic and English banners that read "Al-Tuwaitha - nuclear disaster. Act now!", Greenpeace activists returned a large uranium "yellowcake" mixing canister to US troops stationed inside the nuclear plant, 20 kilometres (12 miles) east of the capital.

The canister -- the size of a small car -- contained significant quantities of radioactive yellowcake and had been left open and unattended for more than 20 days on a busy section of open ground near the Tuwaitha plant, Greenpeace said Tuesday.

Greenpeace activist William Peden of Scotland tries to convince a US soldier of the 1st Armored Division to accept back a canister (behind) containing 'yellow cake' or Uranium Oxide which was looted during the war from the nuclear facility in Tuwaitha, 50 kilometers south of Baghdad, Tuesday, June 24, 2003. The canister was found by the environmentalist group Greenpeace in the village near the facility and allegedly is contaminated. Following the fall of Saddam Hussein, residents living near the complex reportedly took barrels of nuclear materials known as 'yellow cake' and other containers for use to store food and water and unaware that the barrels were radioactive and toxic. The canister was eventually brought into the facility. (AP Photo/Bullit Marquez)

Isn't this amazing? WMD in Iraq. There are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. WMD that wasn't reported to international inspectors, that was claimed to be destroyed. Saddam had lots and lots of chemical weapons, and a hunk of yellowcake the size of a small car.

Rather than shocked, those who wanted to disarm Saddam Hussein should feel vindicated. Looks like there's lots of crow to be served!

One of two things here. Either the loons will claim it's all false information, or they'll totally ignore it. I'm sure they'll try to marginalize it somehow.

Kind of supports the information from the troops on the ground that they had been finding this stuff huh?

Did you see the size of that canister of yellowcake on the flatbed? That thing was huge. That would do a lot of damage after it was refined and enriched.

I wonder if it came from Niger?

Doesn't it strike you as a bit odd that Bush's Iraq Survey Group found in 2004 that;

While a small number of old, abandoned chemical munitions have been discovered, ISG judges that Iraq unilaterally destroyed its undeclared chemical weapons stockpile in 1991. There are no credible indications that Baghdad resumed production of chemical munitions thereafter, a policy ISG attributes to Baghdad’s desire to see sanctions lifted, or rendered ineffectual, or its fear of force against it should WMD be discovered.Link

Or that Bush himself said;

The chief weapons inspector, Charles Duelfer, has now issued a comprehensive report that confirms the earlier conclusion of David Kay that Iraq did not have the weapons that our intelligence believed were there.Link

Moving the bar!  The libs have already started moving the bar.  Dont you find it not strange that when shown proof of their own duplicity that they move the bar and equivocate?

Like I said on the other blog, if they had smuggled a few of these through a port, davad would be here ranting to the heavens about how threatened we are by Bush's policies. It's pretty obvious that no matter what is found, they will have an answer for it, transparent though it is.

Bush told the American people that Saddam could strike directly at them and Blair told the UK parliament that Saddam could hit Britain within "45 minutes". These weapons could have only have been used against an invading force.

How does this justify the war?
on Jun 23, 2006
Even Bush will think you guys are loons the way you are banging on about these so called "WMDs" which are no more advanced or dangerous than the mustard gas used in WWI.

Even Bush has admitted there are no WMDs, but his faithful footsoldiers on JoeUser will carry on hunting for the black snow.

You missed the issue completely. Saddam Lied, Bush did not.  But then you wont believe that since you cannot stand to be wrong.

trust me if they find the deadliest biological substance known to man the left will complain that the containers were dusty and that is doesn't count because it was found on a Tuesday, and everyone knows anything found on a Tuesday by republicans is null and void.

If these 500 shells are so weak and degraded, I dare some of our resident lefties to bath in it, or how about just a small sip, maybe rub some on their skin, after all; it's harmless.

"Saddam Lied, Bush did not."

So Saddam lied, he was a tyrant and a killer, this is to be expected. But Bush purports to be the "leader of the free world". Higher standards are required, I would respect Bush more if he admitted his mistakes.

"the left"

I am not a left winger, there are people on both sides of the fence with deep concerns. You are too partisan to see it that, constantly fighting your imagined enemy.. the drug taking, gay supporting, immigrant loving, anti-war leftie.

" dare some of our resident lefties to bath in it"

Nobody is saying this stuff isn't nasty shit, but unless you are in Iraq this stuff poses no risk to you, which is why these of claims of the WMDs that Bush and Blair promised being found are laughable.

They said America and Europe were in imminent danger from his huge arsenal of international WMDs, they either lied or were incompetent. Either way they should resigned, but guess what, they hang on to office with the 'I'm right everyone that disagrees is stupid' attitude.

Shameful men both of them.

Or maybe it was the result of an official WMD report that was written prematurely and not enough actual information was available to come to the obviously erroneous conclusion.

Any WMD found in Iraq after the report was released proves that Hussein was conducting an active WMD program and that any report saying there was no proscribed WMD in Iraq is incorrect.

Maybes, ifs and buts are no basis for a military invasion. Is there any evidence that Hussein planned to do this? What other excuses do you have in your bag of tricks!

You do realize this stuf, if in the hands of the enemy, could have been shipped to the US or UK and used against the citizens of these countries. Not that people like you care cause if things don't seem 100% exactly like Bush or Blair said they could be then it must not be so bad then, right?

You people are just plain stupid, imminent could have easily ment that Saddam could have given it to a terrorist group, that while Saddam was stalling, these weapons could have been on their way to the US mainland and used against the American people. But no, if it's not a missile it can't be used right? Dumba$$e$.
